Mindfulness -Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Courses

Over the past thirty years, many thousands of participants in MBSR courses have reported significant improvement with conditions such as:

  • Stress
  • Chronic pain or illness
  • Depression
  • Inappropriate expressions of anger
  • High blood pressure
  • Sleep disruption
  • Anxiety and Panic
  • Chronic fear or phobias
  • Concentration or attention problems

In addition, many people have taken courses to improve general wellness, or to obtain mindfulness skills to improve performance in professional, intellectual, social, and sports-related endeavors.

Because the MBSR course is held at the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center, people sometimes wonder if the course is just for cancer patients and survivors, and so I would like to emphasize that the course is not just for cancer patients and survivors, but is for anyone who would like to learn healthy ways to deal with stress. In fact, a number of nurses, doctors, and other healthcare staff in the Middlesex Hospital community, and their friends and family members, have taken this MBSR course in order to reduce stress in their own lives. For more information on whether the MBSR course could be helpful for you, please feel free to call or contact us through our form online.

Course Format

The course schedule consists of eight weekly classes (6pm-8:30pm) and one day-long (9:30am-3:30pm) class or retreat on a Saturday. The course is practical and participatory, and involves the following:

  • Guided instruction in mindfulness meditation practices
  • Instruction and practice of gentle stretching and mindful yoga
  • Group dialogue and discussions aimed at enhancing awareness in everyday life
  • Individually tailored instruction
  • Daily home assignments
  • Two home practice CDs
  • Readings, handouts, and other materials to support the practice of mindfulness

Fee(s) for the course are based on the participant’s estimated household income, using a sliding scale as follows:

Household Income * Tuition
Over: $75,000 $450
Between: $50,000 – $75,000 $400
Under: $50,000 $350

* Thanks to a generous donation to the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center from the non-profit organization After the Storm, breast cancer survivors are eligible to receive funds to participate in this MBSR course and other Integrative Medicine and Survivorship programs at the Cancer Center.
